Battle Drill 12: Dismount a BFV and ICV (07-3-D9433)


CONDITIONS:

The platoon is moving in a BFV or ICV while conducting operations. The platoon is ordered to DISMOUNT.

CUE:

This drill begins when the order is given to prepare to dismount:

STANDARDS:

BFV : the platoon moves to a covered and concealed position to provide protection to the dismounting squads. When the command, “DISMOUNT,” is given, each fire team dismounts in the order specified, in 30 seconds if the ramp is used, or 45 seconds if the combat door is used. The platoon or squad leader establishes security and control of the squads and fire teams.
ICV: the platoon moves to a covered and concealed position to provide protection to the dismounting squads. When the command, “DISMOUNT,” is given, each fire team dismounts following the seating numbers: first out are Soldiers sitting in seats 10 and 11, second is 8 and 9, third is 6 and 7, fourth is 4 and 5, and fifth is seat 3. The squad establishes security after dismounting the vehicle.

TASK STEPS AND PERFORMANCE MEASURES

1. The platoon leader selects the dismount point.

2. The platoon leader orders personnel to dismount :

    a. Gives the warning, “PREPARE TO DISMOUNT.”
    b. Designates dismounted platoon’s weapons composition; for example, “ NO JAVELINS,” “HEAVY ON AT4s,” or “ ALL M240B.”
    c. Gives dismount instructions for each BFV; for example, “ RIGHT (or left ),” distance “ FIFTY METERS,” and identifying terrain feature “ BACKSIDE OF HILL.” The Bradley commander may give dismount instructions to the fire team aboard. The BC can identify the location to the squad/team leader through the squad leader’s display (M2A3 only).

3. Squad/fire team leader(s) monitor commands : he then alerts the Soldiers in the troop compartment.

4. The drivers move the vehicles to the designated dismount point and orient the front of the vehicle toward the enemy.

5. The gunners orient the turret to provide overwatching support and supporting fire, if necessary.

6. The platoon leader gives the command, “DISMOUNT .”

7. Fire team members take the M231 firing port weapons out of the ramp and secure them in the vehicle, if employed.

8. The drivers stop the vehicle and lower the ramp, or the BC orders the ramp access door opened.

9. The fire team members dismount in the specified order and then move to covered and concealed positions (see figures J-16 through J-19):

10. The fire teams linkup with the squads. The squad leaders establish contact with the platoon leader.

11. The mounted element occupies appropriate covered or concealed positions, and overwatches the dismounted element with primary weapons or maintains a hide position.

12. Squad and fire team leader’s position or reposition squad members , if needed .

13. The platoon sergeant or section leader repositions vehicles according to METT-TC.
